Me
My shift at work starts at 10am. I wake up at 9:45am. So…I think it’s safe to say that I am not a morning person. I tend to do all my business at night time. The only problem is most businesses do not tend to do their business at night time. Thus, me doing underwear laundry at 3am in my kitchen sink because the laundry mat closes at 10pm. Please don’t judge me; it is 2009. My late night-ness spills over into my eating habits. Relative to what I just said, most eating establishments (AKA restaurants) do not stay open at 1am. My mission for the late night eats is an impeccable one. That is a perfect seagueway to this next review.

Last week I hopped in the car and went for a cruise. A cruise with a mission. No, not a Disney luxury cruise or an African safari cruise. This cruise was more simple, meaningful and somehow a little more scarier. I don’t know how it was scary…it just was. After cruising the streets of San Diego for about 30 minutes I ran into Soju Town in the Kearney Mesa area of S.D. (4681 Convoy Street, San Diego, CA 92111). The big sign out front that said “MIDNIGHT PHO” might as well said, “Caleb, get yo ass in here!”. It was about 1:30am when I strolled in the spot like Disco Stu. However, Disco Stu was welcomed with silence. No employees or customers were to be found. The only sign of life were the flat screen TVs blasting the latest Korean pop music videos. It was all G-O-O-D though because my passive behavior allowed me not to be angry so I went ahead and sat myself. About 30 minutes later the very nice waiter kicked through the kitchen doors like an old cowboy movie, greeted me and asked for my order. I said, “Give me a muthaphuckin’ pho you muthafuckin’ guy and hurry yo stank ass up because I’m hungry than a muthafucka….shiiiiittttt”. No, I didn’t say that, but wouldn’t that be cool? Muthafucka.
The very nice waiter man took my order and 10 minutes later I was presented with the latest night pho I have ever experienced. The pho was a 6 on a 10 scale. It was nothing to write home to mom about and it was good enough to put a smile on my facial area. Along with Pho, Soju Town offers a wide variety of other Asian style dishes, teas, and desserts that are available 24 hours day. Though the food wasn’t the best quality of Soju Town, I would like to point out that this place has the potential to be a great dating or hanging out with your buddies venue. Not only do they serve food 24 hours, Soju Town also has a bar stocked with Japanese and Korean liquor and beer. The lights are kept dim, yet the place is lit with faint hints of illumination from the various neon signs and 2 large flat screen TVs on the walls. The lighting really gives off a trippy, spaceship vibe. It kind of feels like you’ve been abducted, but can leave anytime.

Soju Town will definitely be kept on my list of late night eats. More so because they are the only 24 hour pho place in San Diego that I know of and they have a bar. Keep in mind that I only had the pho and never tasted the other dishes. Based on this one visit to Soju Town, honestly, if there was better tasting late night pho in town I would go there, but Soju Town seems like the only joint that has the moxy to stay open late. Moxy goes a looooong way in my book. Personality over quality sometimes is the best choice. I would definitely recommend Soju Town!
